Rabbi Schwarz on...
For our Alumni

“First, my perspective of the homeless and the poor has permanently changed, which is a very important and good lesson. And second, I learned a lot about how to look at things from both sides of the argument before deciding my own position.”
- Leora Horowitz

2007 Alumni Reunion

Engaged. Spark. Mission. Empathy. Transformative.

These were the words that sixteen alumni and former PANIM fellows came up with when charged with the task of describing their lifelong service experiences in a single declaration at this year’s PANIM alumni reunion.

The alumni that reunited on May 20th, 2007 for PANIM’s second alumni reunion came from across the United States, from California to Florida, and drew from almost all of PANIM’s programs including: Summer JAM, Panim el Panim, the PANIM fellowship, the Rabbinical student retreats, and the Israel Education and Advocacy seminar. Despite the varied ages and experiences, one thing was clear: PANIM had impacted their lives, studies, and careers, and they returned to Washington eager to give back to the organization.

This year’s reunion programming was designed to further engage alumni in PANIM’s programming, offer a glimpse into what’s in store for PANIM in the coming years, and  encourage them to become involved with the alumni committee. Highlights of the afternoon included Rabbi Sid Schwarz’s presentation on PANIM’s strategic-planning process, a demonstration of JSoN (Jewish Service Online Network) by Melanie Hildebrandt from the Jewish Coalition for Service, and a brainstorming session on the future of the PANIM alumni committee.

Participants left the day feeling recharged and reenergized to get involved.  “Getting back into the ‘PANIM mindset’ was very exciting for me. I was happy to be involved in the beginnings of some intricate planning that will take place in the coming year,” Samantha Slater, former PANIM fellow said.

PANIM's First Annual Alumni Reunion was a big success!
