For our Alumni

"PANIM taught me how interconnected Judaism and politics are. You cannot be a Jew without trying to heal the problems of our world. You cannot be politically active without struggling with Jewish values."

PANIM EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

Just
Judaism. Action. Social Change.

(2007)

Just is a set of textual resources, discussion questions, and planning exercises related to social action and community service all seen through a Jewish lens.  Section One of Just contains extensive text studies.  Chapters include: B’Tzelem Elohim – In The Image of God; Mishpat vs. Tzedek – How Do You Define Justice?; Tzedek, Tzedakah, and Chesed; Self and Community; Truth and Peace; and Universalism and Particularism.  Section Two is a detailed guide for implementing service projects, following the PARE model (preparation, action, reflection, and evaluation).  The Action section contains a unique schema for categorizing civic action initiatives, including examinations of direct service, philanthropy, advocacy, community organizing, and social entrepreneurship.  Justaction.org is an interactive website to view and navigate the entire text of Just, download and post lesson plans, and view sample syllabi.  These materials can be adapted for use with high school students, college students, and adults.

Jewish Civics: A Tikkun Olam/World Repair Manual
(1994)

Geared for use by secondary level supplementary or day school students, the curriculum combines a look at some key social and political issues that have been the focus of the American Jewish community’s energy over the past several decades along with a unique Jewish values matrix which provides a systematic approach to value decision-making related to those same issues.   This resource also features hands-on program suggestions centered around community service. Jewish Civics helps students understand their dual responsibilities as citizens of America and as citizens of the Jewish people. By utilizing a series of cooperative and interactive learning strategies, the curriculum challenges students to think through contemporary social and political issues using the perspective of Jewish values. Units include an overview to Judaism and tikkun olam, an exploration of the organization of the American Jewish Community, a look at special interest groups and the American political system, an issue orientation unit examining Soviet Jewry, Israel-diaspora relations, and civil rights, as well as a guide to Jewish civics in your home community.

Jews, Judaism and Civic Responsibility
(1998)

Designed for use with high school aged day school students, the curriculum provides an historical overview of the Jewish community’s involvement in public affairs, a unit with Jewish texts dealing with civic responsibility and a series of contemporary issues which challenge students to apply the lessons of the sources to actual social and political dilemmas. The Teacher’s Edition provides lesson plans as well as full translations of all of the sources and answers to the questions posed in the student exercises. The curriculum is designed to integrate social studies and Judaic material and would be an ideal course to have team-taught. Units include: An historical orientation to Jewish civic responsibility in America; texts on Jewish civic responsibility; and an issue orientation, which explores such issues as religion and state, discrimination, and American foreign policy.

Judaism and Justice: The Jewish Passion to Repair the World
(Jewish Lights, 2006)
by Rabbi Sid Schwarz
Foreword by Ruth Messinger

Why is it that Jews are so involved in causes dedicated to justice, equality, human rights and peace? Are these trends influenced by religion, history, sociology or something else?

In this provocative exploration, Rabbi Sidney Schwarz, founder and president of PANIM: The Institute for Jewish Leadership and Values, sheds light on the relationship between Judaism, social justice and the Jewish identity of American Jews. He traces how the idea of justice, as developed in the sacred texts of Judaism, conditions Jewish attitudes and behavior.
